Amendments to the Law on Banks that were enacted in February have reduced the authority of the Central Bank of Montenegro (CBCG) in some important supervisory aspects of its mandate and have resulted in unnecessary discord with European Union directives and international standards, says a representative of the Bank. Ljubiša Krgović said that it is possible that some amendments were made at the behest of bank investors. “In the banking sector, such an approach implies a higher risk for depositors and creditors because bank shareholders make decisions and dispose of other people’s funds,” according to their desire to gain the largest return on investment, Krgović said. The Law on Banks was adopted by the ruling Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS). The revised Law incorporates 24 amendments presented by the DPS. Representatives of opposition parties severely criticized the amendments.
