| Europe Day in Podgorica - May 9 |

|
Five years after the end of World War II, on May 9, 1950, Robert Schuman, who was France’s Foreign Minister at the time, presented his vision for a united Europe in order to prevent another outbreak of protracted, bloody warfare on the continent. Specifically, Schuman proposed that European countries pool their coal and steel production, the basis of all military power, to create, "the first concrete foundation of a European federation." The ‘Schuman Declaration’ is widely considered to be the foundation upon which today’s European Union (EU) has been built and May 9 is now known as Europe Day.During the Milan Summit of EU leaders in 1985 it was decided to celebrate May 9 as Europe Day, which is now observed across the continent. In Podgorica, this year’s Europe Day will be celebrated with cultural events, sporting activities and meetings of Montenegro’s political and business communities. At 9:30, 500 school children will gather in the city square where they will write messages to their European brothers and sisters on helium filled balloons, which will be released for the winds to deliver them across the continent. A drawing competition for 300 children will begin at 11:00. The theme of the drawings will be ‘Montenegro on the road to Europe’. While the 300 kids are happily creating art, other kids will be singing and dancing in the square. An international poster exhibition with the theme ‘Balkan perspectives of EU Identity’ will open in Colonials, next to the city square. Friendly adult volleyball and football matches pitting Montenegro against the rest of Europe will begin at the Morača Sports Center at 4 p.m. At 6 p.m. the Slovenian Orchestra will parade through the streets for an hour before performing a one hour concert in the City Square at 7 p.m. In the event of rain, the concert will be moved to the National Theatre. His Excellency Ambassador Leopold Maurer, Head of the European Commission Delegation to Montenegro, will host a reception, following the concert.
