Investments in Montenegro should be distributed in a balanced way so they reach regions other than the coast, says Erhard Busek, the President of the Vienna Economic Forum. Busek was speaking at his organisation’s Montenegro Conference, at Hotel Splendid, in Becici, on April 15. “In some areas the situation in Montenegro is overheated and when I say that, I mean the coastal region. Investments should be distributed to other regions as well,” said Busek. More specifically, Busek said that investments should be made into northern Montenegro’s winter tourism industry. The conference was attended by close to 200 people, of which approximately 80% have either already invested in Montenegro or are interested in doing so. The majority of attendees were from Austria and Hungary. A conference participant asked Prime Minister Milo Djukanović, who made the welcoming address, if Montenegro has the skilled labour force needed to keep pace with development. Djukanović said that his government is taking the necessary steps to assure that the economic boom the country is enjoying would not stall due to a labour shortage. Austrian Ambassador, Florian Rauning, whose efforts helped make the event possible, spoke of the already warm and growing relationship between his country and Montenegro. Christian Toeltl, CEO of Hypo Alpe-Adria Group, told delegates that his organisation highly recommends Montenegro as a country that is coping well with the transition into a free market nation. Daniel Szasz, President of the Board of Directors of T-Com, told attendees that his company has been successful in the country and gave credit to his employees, most of whom are Montenegrin. Busek - a former Vice Chancellor of Austria and the current Special Coordinator of the Stability Pact of South Eastern Europe - told reporters that his organisation is willing to support Montenegro’s efforts to train its people in skilled trades and other education initiatives. It was evident that Montenegrin authorities are well aware of challenges they face and are committed to handling the heavy workload. The primary purpose of the Vienna Economic Forum is, “to promote investment opportunities in the region between the Adriatic and Black Seas.” The Forum was founded in 2004. The Prime Ministers of all the states from the region, together with the Austrian Federal Chancellor, the Committee of Patrons of the Vienna Economic Forum and all the Ambassadors of the countries from the region take part in the work of the Forum as Honorary Members Busek - who has been actively involved in the transformation of Montenegro since 1997-1998 - encouraged the government to continue implementing the Stabilization and Association Agreement and simultaneously adhere to the Copenhagen criteria. The Copenhagen criteria require a state to have the institutions to preserve democratic governance and human rights, have a functioning market economy and accept the obligations and intent of the European Union. The Deputy of Prime Minister, Vuijca Lazović, said the country is facing the biggest investment cycle in its history. He said that positive signals from Brussels were coming more often as a result of the economic and investment boom in Montenegro, proving that the country was getting closer to achieving the goals of the Euro-Atlantic integration processes. The Vienna Economic Forum organises conferences abroad during the year in the capital cities of its member countries, under the patronage of the Prime Minister of each country. The Forum will hold it’s next conference in Tirana, Albania on June 8 and 9.
